"It has always seemed strange to me that no one has ever endowed a professorship in criminal science in any of our large universities." Craig Kennedy laid down his evening paper and filled his pipe with my tobacco. In college we had roomed together, had shared everything, even poverty, and now that Craig was a professor of chemistry and I was on the staff of the Star, we had continued the arrangement. Prosperity found us in a rather neat bachelor apartment on the Heights, not far from the University.

The Silent Bullet Arthur B Reeve 9781532706356 Books Reviews

I love these stories that use the scientific method to solve crimes. Yes, the science is dated but the application is always ingenious.
A good collection of early 20th century short mystery stories that star a professor (who believes that science can be used to solve crimes) and his sidekick (a newspaper man looking for a story). The writing is done pretty well and the stories (being short stories), are not long and involved mysteries. Much of the science is stuff we take for granted now, but it is almost charming when the professor describes throwing two strands of wire off of the rooftop to the police so that they can connect up a bell as a signaling system.
Like Sherlock Holmes, a series of lessons against committing crime. Different from Sherlock Holmes, these stories include a science lesson and tools well advanced for times.
A fun walk thru the use of science as a crime solving tool. Calling it an interesting read is a severe understatement. Enjoy!
America's Answer to Sherlock Holmes! Craig Kennedy is not Holmes but a professor at Columbia U. Who leans a bit more to scientific exploration than Mr. Holmes. I really like these short stories and if you tire of the pastiches on Holmes and Watson here is a few stories you might find refreshing, a nice diversion.
Enter an American Sherlock Holmes solving crimes in the early twentieth century. His side kick in this instance is a friend and doesn’t seem to contribute to solving the actual cases. The ‘Sherlock’ uses early century science or test instruments to solve his cases.
The book begins with a brief preface, a dialog between Professor Craig Kennedy and newspaperman/sidekick/narrator Walter Jameson. Kennedy remarks that it has always seemed strange to him that none of the large American universities are endowed with a "professorship in criminal science." He points out that the old college "ideal of pure culture" has gone out of date and that professors have become directly involved in many areas of social policy... except crime. The dozen stories that follow offer examples of how a scientist (Kennedy is a chemist) could apply his skills at detecting and defeating criminals.

While Reeve is obviously trying to make a point, he is primarily a good story-teller. He doesn't over-sermonize on the need for criminal science but lets Kennedy's methods argue the case for what has become the CSI we're familiar with. Kennedy uses his scientific knowledge not only to discover and analyze evidence (a methodology practiced by Holmes among others) but also to trap the criminal. The "advanced" technology featured in the stories--microphones, seismographs, x-rays--seems commonplace to us now, but that doesn't distract from the enjoyment of the tales. In fact, Reeve's enthusiasm for the technological wonders of the nascent 20th century adds to the pleasure of these short stories.
What an amazing book! A collection of short stories put together as a continuous story, the chemist professor hero shows his talents in all sorts of newly (at the time) developed fields of science, medicine, physics, chemistry.

Author Reeves must have had access to some real brainpower, since a lot of this was probably experimental at the time. He even gives an extensive description of a gyroscopic helicopter- while mentioning that planes were still a fairly new invention.

Much of this book reads like early CSI, right down to the technique for keeping the evidence untainted.

Engaging hero and inevitable sidekick, fascinating and inventive stories, and crisp clean writing style.

I really recommend this one, and am off to hunt more titles by this author. Thumbs up!!!!!
