Never Been Texted Linda Joy Singleton Books
Ashlee’s mother died a year ago and she lives with a caring yet distant stepfather. She’s never had a cell phone and he promises her one for her birthday, yet he forgets! She takes matters into her own hands and gets a great deal on a phone. The phone seems to malfunction with sound and light. Also, on it she receives text messages from the most popular boy in town. The phone number must surely have belonged to the boy’s girlfriend. Derrick is the son of the mayor and the boyfriend of Beatrice, an enemy who constantly belittles and sabotages her. When Derrick becomes interested in her, she’s not sure if a real relationship is in the horizon. There’s also an upcoming talent show she needs to prepare for. Since her phone is acting magical, perhaps it can guide her in these pursuits.
Ashlee had a complicated relationship with her stepfather considering her mother’s death and the grief they both share. Ashlee’s friend Rory is a great secondary character. Beatrice is an antagonist who really gets on the reader’s nerve. I wondered why a great guy like Derrick was interested in her in the first place. This novel is a wonderful, modern retelling of the Cinderella fairytale.

Never Been Texted Linda Joy Singleton Books Reviews
Never Been Texted was a quick, entertaining read. What I liked most about it was how much personality the characters and the town had. It made the book more unique and kept the pages turning. While it is somewhat a "twist" on Cinderella, it didn't give the vibe of "I've heard this story a million times." The only "complaint" I have is that the characters felt more like 13 or 14 than 16 (except Rory). But that didn't really take away from the story. It's a book worth picking up if you like midgrade or young adult novels or if you're looking for a gift for a young teen.
There’s something magical about the mauve cell phone that Ashlee buys at a store she’s never seen before, for exactly the amount of money she has with her ($2.47). She gets texts from a guy called Prince. People show up to help Ashlee without her even asking. The store owner who sold her the phone sends helpful hints to Ashlee (even though the store has disappeared—or did it ever exist?)
Ashlee and her stepdad raise Queen-Bee dogs at the kennel they own, cute little dogs that purr instead of bark! When Ashlee dares to enter the school talent contest with her dancing dog and a magical hoop, she encounters the wrath of school bully Beatrice. Even worse, the texts on Ashlee’s phone are from Beatrice’s boyfriend, Derrick, who believes he’s sending them to Beatrice, not Ashlee.
Ashlee learns to stand up for herself and how to get what she really wants. Dogs, a bit of magic, a new boyfriend, and a happy ending—what more can a young reader ask for?
